I’m glad you are visiting the UT Dallas Computer Science Department Web site; I hope you find the information you need here. More than ever, computer science at UT Dallas is a high-energy, intellectually exciting experience. Briefly, let me tell you about it.
It’s easy to tell that a lot is happening here. We’re surrounded by one of the United States’ most intense concentrations of high-technology enterprise. The Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science is a common ground where students participate as technical specialists, entrepreneurs, and researchers coming together to work on problems that are intriguing, difficult, and satisfying.
We’re committed to world-class teaching and scholarship, to learning that balances theoretical and experimental computer science. Every member of our large faculty is here because they care deeply about students and computer-science research. There is nothing we enjoy more than leading students toward the pleasure of discovering fresh perspectives and finding creative solutions to computer-science problems.

I’m often asked what makes computer science at UT Dallas different. After all, you can take courses in artificial intelligence or algorithmic analysis most anywhere; so, why are students turning down offers from big-name schools to spend their undergraduate years, or start their graduate studies, here?
That’s easy: three reasons.
First, our faculty and students. With more than 40 scholars, a combined student enrollment of more than 1,300, and large, comfortable, state-of-the-art labs, the department has the resources and dynamism you would expect to find at much larger research universities. A faculty this large ensures a rich diversity of expertise and research interests, which guarantees a virtual feast of research opportunities. Students with research interests that are cross-disciplinary or bridge traditional boundaries are especially in luck.
Second, we’re in the midst of literally hundreds of high-technology businesses in North Texas that play high-profile roles in the computer-science department. Their involvement gives us a unique blend of the academic and techno-commerce cultures that is hard to find elsewhere. It also means ample opportunities for students to plunge into real-world computer science through our co-op program, one of the nation’s five largest.
Third, although we’re already a nationally recognized center for computer science research and education, there has never been a more dynamic time in the history of our department. Our enrollment will double during the next five years, and so will the size of our faculty. We will add 10 endowed chairs, as well as research professorships, graduate-student fellowships, and a visiting-scholars program. It is all part of the Jonsson School’s $100 million drive to become one of the nation’s top 50 engineering and computer science programs.
A brilliant, vibrant future is ahead of us. I hope you will be part of it.
