Something for Everyone

To celebrate Martin Luther King Day on 1/20/2014, the Computer Science (CS) Department at UTDallas held computer workshops for students of all ages. Underprivileged school students attended for FREE! Workshops were available for students of all skill levels – beginner, intermediate, and advanced.   Most workshops were held in either the morning or afternoon and some of the more advanced workshops lasted all day. A pizza lunch was served to all attendees. Approximately 200 students attended the workshops.

Pictured above is the family of Hugo and Guadeloupe Espiritu who attended various workshops, throughout the day. Only eight of the ten children were in attendance because the two oldest children were away at college. Included in the picture, with their parents are: Jonathan (14), Miriam (12), Daniel (10), Samuel (9), Maria Lourdes (6), Andres (5), Maria Isabel (3), and Pedro (1).  Several of the children had attended previous workshops and were back for more!

Dr. Jey Veerasamy, Director of CS Outreach and CS Teaching Faculty at UTDallas, organized the workshops. Teams of talented graduate students, from the CS Department, volunteered to teach the workshops and shared their laptops with students who needed them.
