UT Dallas Competitive Programming Team takes 2nd Place at ICPC South Central USA Regional Contest
On November 9th of this year, the UT Dallas Competitive Programming Teams competed and won second place at the ICPC South Central USA Regional Contest (SCUSA). The 2nd place winning team consisted of Darrin Wiley, An Nguyen, and Duy Vu. Our teams took second, eighth, and tenth place Out of more than 60 teams, the UT Dallas teams placed in the top ten qualifying them to compete in the North America Championship. They will go on to compete in a USA-wide contest in February to select the teams that will represent the USA in the World Finals in Moscow next May.
The regional contest involves Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. The contest consisted of 12 challenging problems to be solved in 5 hours. Comet team was awarded the gold medal for solving all 12 problems, team three was awarded the silver medal for completing seven problems, and team two was awarded the bronze medal for completing six problems.
UT Dallas CS Professor and Codeburners director, Dr. Ivor Page, congratulated the team’s hard work saying, “We have competed in the 3-state South Central Region for 20 years – Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma – against teams from all the top universities in those states. Coming second overall is an excellent achievement, especially when you see that your team solved all the problems, which is an amazing feat. Outstanding!!” He continued to congratulate the programming coach and UT Dallas CS professor, Dr. Bhadrachalam Chitturi, as well thanking the assistant coach, graduate student, Mohammadreza Haghpanah (Reza) noting, “Dr. Chitturi, Mohammadreza Haghpanah, and all the students worked very hard for the past many months and years to hone their skills and represent UT Dallas.”
The three teams consisted of the following students: Darrin Wiley, An Nguyen, Duy Vu, George Yi, Andrei Racila, Walter Han, Jackson Allen, Abdullah Akbar, and Peter Kwak. The UT Dallas Competitive programming teams have been competing in the ACM ICPC every year since 2001.
