Haas Receives ICOIN 2021 Best Paper Award

Earlier this year, a paper written by Dr. Zygmunt Haas and a post-doc in his research group, Dr. Zhong Zheng, entitled “Engineering a Network in the Sky,” won the Best Paper Award at the 35th International Conference on Information Networking (ICOIN 2021).

The conference took place on January 13-16, 2021, in Jeju Island, South Korea, with some participants attending virtually due to the COVID pandemic. The conference was organized by the Korea Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers (KIISE). ICOIN has traditionally been one of the most comprehensive conferences focusing on various aspects of advances in computer communication and networking technologies. In particular, one of the main purposes of ICOIN 2021 was to stimulate novel research and to encourage open discussions on computer communication and networking technologies.

The “Engineering a Network in the Sky” paper describes a novel technique, invented by Dr. Haas’s research group, in which the communication between two Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) is created by the transmitting UAV recruiting other UAVs in its neighborhood to utilize these nodes and to create a powerful link to the receiver. Such a Collaborative MIMO system requires frequent reconfigurations, as the set of neighboring nodes is continually changing. Dr. Haas’s research group termed such a system “Reconfigurable Distributed MIMO (RD-MIMO)” and evaluated the reconfiguration frequency and the events that trigger the reconfiguration process of the system.

Traditionally, the ICOIN Best Paper Awards are given to the authors of the papers with the highest quality among all competitive papers presented at the conference. This year, the ICOIN’21 conference attracted close to 500 submissions. From these submissions, the best papers are selected in two steps. First, selected technical program committee co-chairs pre-select a small number of papers from all competitive track submissions that have received the most positive reviewer feedback. After that, the organizing general co-chairs review these pre-selected papers anonymously and determine the selected best papers. The awards are announced on the first day of the conference, during the conference opening remarks, which this year was on January 13, 2021.

The work was supported by a contract from the Army Research Labs (ARL) and was performed while Dr. Zhong Zheng was employed by the University of Texas at Dallas.
