UT Dallas CS Department Hosts The 2018 Data Science Conference

Data enthusiasts, academics, and professionals alike joined together earlier this month at the 2018 UT Dallas Computer Science Department Data Science Conference to learn about new insights in the fields of data science and data analytics. The goal of the conference was to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to discuss important research questions and challenges.

The conference began with three parallel workshops in the morning followed by technical talks and networking opportunities in the afternoon. The purpose of these workshops was to provide an opportunity for participants to present and discuss novel ideas on current and emerging topics relevant to data science.  This year’s Data Science Conference included the following hands-on workshops:

  • Data Science with Python Professor Kamran Khan, UT Dallas CS Faculty
  • Data Science with TensorFlow – Dr. Anurag Nagar, UT Dallas CS Faculty
  • Interactive Analytics and Story Telling: From Python-Pandas – Matplotlib to Tableau – Viswanath Puttagunta, CTO and Principal Data Scientist at Divergence Academy

During the second half of the day, attendees were afforded the opportunity to listen to data scientists discuss, address and advance the application of data science to benefit all aspects of society. These invited talks featured speakers who have directly contributed to successful data mining applications in their respective fields. These invited talks also included a keynote from Dave Copps, a serial entrepreneur, who has built and sold three companies centered around AI. Dave shared highlights of exciting things that are happening in AI today and how they are impacting every aspect of our life.

The talks featured at the conference included the following:

  • Exponential Technologies and the Acceleration of Everything Dave Copps, Visionary Technologist, Entrepreneur, CEO
  • Fraud Detection in Customer Loyalty Programs Subhashini Tripuraneni, Head of AI & DS, 7-Eleven
  • The Automation Mindset: Tips/Tools for Streamlining Data Science Workflows – Sydeaka Watson, Senior Data Scientist, AT&T Chief Data Office, Owner & Lead Data Scientist, Korelasi Data Insights, L.L.C.
  • An Inductive Logic Programming Approach to Explainable Machine Learning Farhad Shakerin, PhD Candidate, UT Dallas
  • Computational Intelligence Tool for Patient Behavioral Health Status Tracking  Michael Morgan, Managing Director, Morgan Analytics Research Institute
  • The Power of Suggestion: An Introduction to Recommender Engines Mimi Park, Slalom Data Scientist, Slalom Consulting
  • IoT Analytics using Azure Databricks and Pyspark Prasad Chandravihar, Lead Data Scientist, Lennox International
  • Big Data Stream Analytics for Cyber Security Dr. Latifur Khan, UT Dallas CS Professor
