IEEE Reliability Society Recognizes Dr. Eric Wong as Engineer of the Year

In January 2015, Dr. Eric Wong, professor and the Director of International Outreach in the Computer Science department at UT Dallas, received the Engineer of the Year Award from the IEEE Reliability Society. This award recognizes Professor Wong’s key contributions in software testing and quality assurance occurring within the last few years. The IEEE Reliability Society does not necessarily offer this award each year. The award is a testimony to Dr. Wong’s technical achievements, his involvement in IEEE, and reliability-related professional activities

Dr. Wong was presented with his award at the IEEE Reliability Society Award Dinner on January 24, 2015, in Palm Harbor, Florida. It was also announced at the Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS) banquet on January 28th at the same location.

Dr. Wong’s research focuses on helping practitioners improve the quality of software while reducing the cost of production. In particular, he is working on software testing, program debugging, risk analysis and reliability. Recently, his research group has developed different techniques for software fault localization based on execution slicing, code coverage/program spectra, experienced-based heuristics, neural networks, statistical analysis, and clustering for programs not only with mutation-based faults but also with real-life defects. Guidance has been provided to help produce high quality software more cost effectively. Two of his research papers have received best paper awards.

In the fall of 2014, as the Founding Director, Professor Wong and his colleagues established an Advanced Research Center on Software Testing and Quality Assurance. The primary objective is to conduct research and develop advanced cutting-edge technologies, with user-friendly tool support, for technology transfer. The major focus is on closing the gap between the state-of-art research conducted in an academic setting and the state-of-practice techniques used in the field, and making the center a leading research facility on software testing and quality assurance in the north Texas area.
